Port Adelaide Enfield Lighting Strategy

[Back to Urban Design]

Port Adelaide Centre, SA

The preparation of a lighting strategy for the Port Adelaide Centre celebrates the significance of the cultural landscape through lighting and colour, with a balance of both indigenous and ‘pioneering’ values. This 'cultural fusion' interprets and expresses the Kaurna 'spirit of place' in combination with the ‘pioneering’ values that define the quintessential Port Adelaide experience.

The creation of a lighting strategy has involved identifying and capturing the unique ‘sense of place’ of the study area, and articulating this influence into imaginative lighting. Distinct character precincts have been determined in the Port Adelaide Centre which have been considered in the establishing of a style that creates a common thread across the project area. Consideration has also been given to the over arching structural, architectural, historical and cultural features of the centre.

Amenity lighting is a unique infrastructure element and within each character precinct lighting has a particular role to fulfil in celebrating the public realm. An understanding of the existing 'style and language' as established in the Port Adelaide Centre Public Domain Manual has assisted in ensuring that the lighting of key features and public spaces complements the existing infrastructure.

The lighting strategy defines short, medium and long term opportunities and guides and informs the location, nature and priority of lighting improvements in the centre over a twenty year period. The lighting design outcomes aim to be harmonious with the environment, suggesting the use of materials, elements and finishes that are sympathetic to the location and enrich the public realm, both with regard to their appearance and function, and life cycle costing and self-sustaining, low maintenance solutions which avoid future burdens on asset management budgets.
